*WARNING*

We do not recommend lemurs as pets to inexperienced exotic animal owners. Only approved applicants who have done their research on this challenging exotic animal will be considered. Ring-tailed lemurs are the most aggressive species of lemur, and they will get aggressive toward humans if they are hand-raised, even with proper care. Babies will be sweet and docile, but most ring-tailed lemurs will become territorial and start attacking humans after reaching sexual maturity around 2 years old, even if they are fixed. While they are a cute animal, lemurs have razor sharp teeth, and the wounds they inflict often need professional medical attention. We do not recommend them for households with children or elderly, as those are typically their go-to victims. Many ring-tailed lemurs attack their owners even. And remember… lemurs live up to 30 years in captivity! Be prepared for this commitment!

Some ways to reduce the likelihood of your ring-tailed lemur from becoming aggressive include:

  • Raising them in a more “hands off” method. After the hand-feeding stage, allow your animal companions to roam free in a large outdoor enclosure rather than living indoors with humans 24/7 like typical domestic animals.

  • Raising pet lemurs in a troop setting. Get two or more lemurs to raise together.

If you won’t do either of the 2 methods above, then make sure you have a backup plan when (not if) your lemur starts attacking people. A large outdoor enclosure for them to live out their entire life, and with at least one other ring-tailed lemur companion.

Ruffed lemurs are far more likely to remain docile and will remain gentle and handleable as adults. Brown lemurs are “hit or miss” - some will stay docile while others can get as aggressive as a ringtail.

We highly suggest all applicants to join the Lemur Husbandry group on Facebook to read about experiences from other lemur owners to see if your household and lifestyle are a good fit for a lemur. We are, however, happy to answer any specific questions you may have once you have done some research on lemur ownership.

RING-TAILED LEMUR REQUIREMENT

We will not place a single ring-tailed lemur in a home without another lemur for the reasons stated in the section above. We will be happy to discount any additional lemurs if you do not have any lemurs yet. Getting 2 or more lemurs will NOT mean they will bond to you any less, just like having 2 or more dogs does not mean each dog will love you less. Lemurs are social animals that need the companionship of other lemurs in order to thrive. If it is not within your budget to get 2 lemurs, then please wait or choose another species instead.

Dragonstone Ranch allows ring-tailed lemurs to go home with approved pet homes to bring awareness to this endangered species and share the love and joy they bring to our lives. We must do right by them and never allow them to live in a household alone without the opportunity to thrive. We will not place single lemurs into pet homes, just to see them surrendered when they reach sexual maturity a few years later, which is more heartbreaking and detrimental to the lemur than it is for their human family! We will ensure that our lemurs grow up in the best situations possible, so our policy is FIRM!

SPAYING & NEUTERING: Having your lemur spayed or neutered when they are old enough (around 6 months) will help them live a longer, healthier life, as it will protect them from certain cancers and diseases. Sterilizing your lemur may also help reduce aggressive and territorial behaviors.
