Long-eared hedgehog care

Care requirements of long-eared hedgehogs (“LEH”) is quite different than that of your typical African pygmy hedgehog (“APH”), as they are much more active. Some of the differences include:

  • More supplemental protein in the diet in addition to the balanced nutrition of high quality cat kibble, such as:

    • Insects, lots of them!

    • Raw ground meat

    • Small whole prey - mice, chicks, etc.

    • Eggs - they love raw quail eggs.

  • Larger enclosures. We prefer 10-12 sq ft.

  • Lots of free roam time outside of the cage.

  • More enrichment. They love to play with interactive cat toys.

  • More agile as a climber than APH.

  • Typically will not ball up like APH. However, LEH may choose to bite when scare or aggravated, instead.

    • Because of this, we do not recommend LEH as a pet for small children or the novice/timid handler.

  • Consistent handling is NECESSARY to keep them tame and less “bitey”. However, they may still bite even with constant handling, as it is just their natural defense mechanism.

  • Some LEH may be slightly larger than your average APH, but, like all animals, they come in all shapes and sizes, too.

  • Have really long nails - make sure to only clip around the quick.

  • Longer average lifespan of 7 years vs. only 3-5 for APH.
