All of our African crested porcupine babies are hand-raised and extremely tame. Your porcupette will come with a care package, travel carrier, and breeder support for the lifetime of the animal. The care package includes milk replacer, bottle & nipple, biscuits, and a Dragonstone Exotics backpack to carry all the supplies. For an additional fee of $50, baby porcupines can receive a physical exam and health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian before leaving our care. A health certificate is required for interstate travel.

Once weaned, we feed our porcupines following diet: high-quality dog kibble, monkey biscuits, rodent blocks, and fruits and vegetables.

Please do your research before making the decision to bring home a porcupine. Baby porcupines are tiny and manageable in a small cage, but mature porcupines get big and will definitely require some outdoor space! While porcupines can make an amazing pet for many people, they are still exotic animals and may not be the best pet for all.

At Dragonstone Ranch, we recommend being especially careful when interacting with a pet porcupine. Even though a porcupine is a wonderful pet and friend, you must provide it with appropriate boundaries and understand its limitations as a wild animal. When caring for your pet porcupine, you must consider many factors, including diet, cage size, temperature control and habitat.

  • Remember, pet porcupines won't behave like traditional pet animals. Pet porcupines aren't pocket pets, and they have unique characteristics you should be aware of when deciding if you're up for the challenge of porcupine pet care.

When quilled by a pet porcupine, the first step is to stay calm and avoid moving. Try not to panic, as sudden movement could further injure the affected area. Seek medical advice as soon as possible. Avoid picking the quills yourself as they could be barbed and further lodge deeper into the skin.

  • Adult porcupines eat more than traditional house pets. They're wild animals, so their diets should be similar to the natural diets while in the wild. The pet porcupine diet consists of fresh vegetables, fruits, grasses and small amounts of commercial rodent food or dog food. To keep our porcupines healthy and active as pets, we must ensure they eat as healthy as possible.

A twice-daily meal with occasional fruit snacks is the perfect dietary routine for porcupines. Apples, due to their high fiber and glucose content, are well-liked by these animals, as are corn-on-the-cob and yellow pumpkins.

  • As a healthy diet is important, it's also essential to provide enough cage space. As previously mentioned, porcupines are wild animals and need more space to roam than a typical household pet. Provide your porcupine with at least 15-20 square feet of space to run around, explore and rest.

  • Temperature control is important when caring for pet porcupines. The ideal temperature for porcupines is around 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit, but you may need to adjust this depending on the porcupine breed.

  • Lastly, provide your pet porcupine with plenty of safe and comfortable hiding places, such as small wooden houses and plastic tunnels. Providing hiding spots can help alleviate the stress of adjusting to a human household.
